I hope that throughout my following posts they will give you an insight into Moroccan culture and the geography of the country. In my first post I am going to give a bit of background information about Morocco.

Morocco is located in Northwest Africa in the Maghreb region and is slightly larger than California, with a total area of 446,550 square km. The Atlantic Ocean is located on the West of Morocco, with the Mediterranean Sea at the North. You are able to see both of these oceans at the same time and Morocco is only 13km from Europe, across the Strait of Gibraltar. Morocco is bordered by Algeria on the East and the West Sahara desert at the South of the country. The population of Morocco is 33.8 million people and Rabat is the capital. The top three largest cities are; Casablanca, Fez and Marrakech. The official languages spoken are Arabic and Berber and Islam is the dominant religion of Morocco. The highest point in Morocco is a mountain called Toubkal located in the southwest of the country. It stands at 4,167 metres high.

The flag of Morocco consists of a green star on a red background. The star represents the seal of Solomon and the green is the colour of Islam and represents joy, love and hope. The red background portrays bravery, strength, hardiness and valour.
